The History of Hurricanes in the Missippi Gulf Coast
Over 9000 people have died in deadly hurricanes near the Gulf Coast since the early 1900′s. These hurricanes have created a tremendous amount of damage that some estimate to have cost over 30 billions dollars. These deadly hurricanes have reached all the way from Florida’s west coast to Brownsville Texas.
Most people do not realize how horrific it can be to live through a deadly and costly storm. It can take several years to recover and rebuild after a monstrous storm makes it through this part of the country. Residents must understand the importance of learning from the past historic storms and find ways to stay prepared for an emergency.
The deadliest hurricane is United States history occurred on September 8 1900 in Galveston Texas. This violent storm killed more than 6000 people, due to the storm surge that reached up to 15 feet. This surge destroyed over half of all homes and businesses and flooded the entire island.
Over 100 years later, on August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina hit landfall on southeast Louisiana. This storm cause the levee system to fail and flooded homes and business.
